The film opens with a Vietnam Vet committing suicide by jumping from a roof of a hospital. He leaves a note to his friend (Jones) telling him that he has the plans to take over New York City’s Central Park. He leaves him the maps as well as an arsenal of weapons, bombs, AK-47s, and grenade launchers. All this is conveniently stored in a drainage tunnel in the park.
While going to check out if his friend was for real, a couple of New York City cops harass Jones. Since Jones is also a Viet Nam vet, and is tired of this sort of treatment, he decides to follow through with his friend’s wishes and take over the park.
This turns out to be a pretty easy thing. Despite the size of Central Park (the film was actually shot in Toronto), Jones only encounters one couple. He scares them out with his rifle, bombs a police substation, and the park is indeed his.
Yaphet Kotto plays a police sergeant, with a heart of gold. Helen Shaver is a photojournalist who sneaks into the park to become a hostage / accomplice of sorts.
The film plays out like an episode of THE A-TEAM where hardly anyone is even hurt. Jones may be a psycho planting bombs all over the place, but no one is injured. Even when a helicopter is shot out of the sky, like when a jeep flipped on THE A-TEAM, there is always a shot showing us that they survived.
