In Phoenix, Arizona, Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) steals $40,000 from her employer to marry her boyfriend Sam Loomis (John Gavin), and then flees to Sam’s house with the money. Along the way, she trades in her car to evade authorities, and during a storm on the trip, she checks into the isolated Bates Motel. The proprietor, Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins), invites her to dinner at his family house on the hill overlooking the motel. When he leaves to prepare dinner, Marion hears him arguing with his mother, who tells him that she refuses to allow him “bringing in strange, young girls for supper”.

Norman brings dinner to the motel to eat there instead. The two proceed to have a conversation over dinner, topics ranging from taxidermy to Norman’s mother, who he says has been mentally ill since the death of her lover. When Marion suggests that his mother be institutionalized, he gets upset, saying he wants to do so but does not want to abandon her. He compares his life to being in a “trap,” and observes that everyone is in a similar situation. Marion agrees with him, telling him that she “stepped into a private trap back in Phoenix.” Afterward, Marion returns to her room, where she resolves to return the money. Norman, who has become intrigued with her, watches her undress through a hole in the wall, obscured by a painting. After Marion counts the money, she takes a shower. During the shower, an anonymous female assailant enters the bathroom and stabs her to death. Back at the house, Norman calls out to his mother: “Mother! Oh, God, mother! Blood! Blood!”

He runs to the motel, where he finds the corpse; he presumes his mother killed Marion, so he tries to erase all traces of the crime to protect her. He puts Marion’s body and all her possessions, including money hidden in a newspaper, into the trunk of her car and sinks it in a nearby swamp.

On Halloween night, 1963, six-year-old Michael Myers (Will Sandin) murders his seventeen-year-old sister, Judith (Sandy Johnson) with a large kitchen knife at their home in Haddonfield, Illinois. His parents arrive home minutes later and find him in a trance-like state. Incarcerated in Smith’s Grove Warren County Sanitarium, Michael is placed under the care of child psychiatrist Dr. Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasence).

Eight years of treatment convinces Loomis that Michael is pure evil. An additional seven years is spent trying to keep Michael locked up. However, on 30 October 1978 Michael is to be transferred and prosecuted as an adult. As Loomis and his assistant Marion Chambers (Nancy Stephens) arrive at Smith’s Grove to take the 21-year-old Myers to court, Michael attacks the car nearly killing Marion, steals the car and escapes. Loomis goes in pursuit of Myers. He learns that Judith Myers’ tombstone is missing and is convinced Michael will return home.

Michael (Nick Castle), wearing a navy boiler suit and a white mask, indeed returns to his home in Haddonfield, which is now derelict. There he stalks teenager Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and some of her friends. Laurie becomes spooked after spotting Michael several times that day. That evening Laurie meets her friend Annie Brackett (Nancy Kyes) who is babysitting Lindsey Wallace (Kyle Richards) across the street from where Laurie is babysitting Tommy Doyle (Brian Andrews).

Zach Galligan, the star of the first Gremlins, is back, along with Phoebe Cates, his girlfriend from the first film. They’re both working in an ultramodern skyscraper owned by a Donald Trump clone (a hilarious John Glover). Galligan’s furry little buddy is captured by a mad scientist, who not only helps it multiply, but invests the nasty, scaly offspring with intelligence and the ability to talk. (Watch for the one that has Tony Randall’s voice.) What follows is imaginative mayhem that spoofs old movies, modern television, and the conveniences of postmodern technology. In some ways, the sequel is even more inventive and laughter-inducing than the original.

But Christine’s time is fast running out, and unless she’s able to break the curse, she’ll be tormented by a demon for three days before literally being dragged to hell.

Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp), a skilled barber, is falsely charged and sentenced to a life of hard labor in Australia by the corrupt Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman), who lusts after Barker’s wife Lucy (Laura Michelle Kelly). Now under the assumed name “Sweeney Todd”, Barker returns to London with sailor Anthony Hope (Jamie Campbell Bower). At his old Fleet Street lodgings above Mrs. Nellie Lovett’s (Helena Bonham Carter) pie shop, he discovers that Lucy, having been raped by Turpin, has poisoned herself, and his teenage daughter Johanna (Jayne Wisener) is now Turpin’s ward, and like her mother before her, is the object of his unwanted affections. Todd vows revenge, reopening his barber shop in the upstairs flat.
