In modern times, in the city of Verona Beach, the Capulets and the Montagues are two rival business powers. The animosity of the older generation – Fulgencio (Paul Sorvino) and Gloria Capulet (Diane Venora) and Ted (Brian Dennehy) and Caroline Montague (Christina Pickles) – is also felt by their younger relatives. While stopping for gas, the Montague boys – led by Benvolio (Dash Mihok), Romeo’s cousin – come face to face with the Capulet boys – led by Tybalt (John Leguizamo), Juliet’s cousin. The two gangs quickly strike up an argument, which escalates into a gun fight between Benvolio and Tybalt, who set fire to the petrol station and create chaos in the city. The Chief of Police, Captain Prince (Vondie Curtis-Hall), forces them to lay down their weapons. Captain Prince reprimands the boys, as well as Fulgencio and Ted, blaming them for three street brawls. He warns them that if such behavior continues, their lives “shall pay the forfeit of peace.”

Later on, Caroline expresses her worry over Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio), who has been depressed. Benvolio agrees to talk to his cousin and determine what is bothering him. Romeo admits he is in love, but that the object of his affection, Rosaline, does not love him. Meanwhile, Dave Paris (Paul Rudd), son of the Governor and nominated ‘Bachelor of the Year’, meets with Fulgencio. Paris has his heart set on marrying Fulgencio’s beautiful daughter Juliet (Claire Danes), but the Capulet patriarch thinks she is too young. Nevertheless, he invites Paris to a fancy dress party he is hosting that night. At the Capulet mansion, as she prepares herself for the party, Gloria tries to convince Juliet to accept Paris’ marriage proposal, citing his many attributes, but she is not swayed.

That night, at Sycamore Grove, the Montague boys and Romeo (dressed as a knight) meet up with their friend Mercutio (Harold Perrineau), who has gotten them each a ticket to the Capulet party. Mercutio tries to convince Romeo to cheer up and come to the party (which Rosaline will also be attending), but his love-sick friend declines. Romeo tries to tell him of a dream he has had, but Mercutio makes fun of him. Romeo, although he has a bad feeling about the night ahead, takes a pill Mercutio gives him, and they all proceed to the Capulet mansion. However, the effects of the drug and the wild party overwhelm Romeo, who goes into the restroom to wash his face. There, while admiring the fish tank, he spots Juliet on the other side, dressed as an angel.

The film begins with a voiceover describing the trench warfare situation of World War I up to 1916; immediately following this is a scene in which General George Broulard (Adolphe Menjou) of the French General Staff asks his subordinate, General Mireau (George Macready), to send his division on a suicidal mission to take a well-defended German position called the “Anthill”. Mireau initially advises against the attack, citing the low probability of success and the danger to his beloved soldiers, but when General Broulard mentions the possibility of a promotion, Mireau quickly convinces himself the attack will succeed.

Mireau proceeds to walk through the trenches, addressing his men. He asks several soldiers (some of whom later become major characters) the question, “Ready to kill more Germans?” He throws one soldier out of the regiment for showing signs of shell shock, which Mireau denies exists, blaming the soldier’s behavior on cowardice. Mireau leaves the detailed planning of the attack to the 701′s Régiment Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas) despite Dax’s protests that the only result of the attack will be to weaken the French army with heavy losses for no benefit. Mireau does not relent.

During a scouting mission prior to the attack, a drunken lieutenant named Roget (played by Wayne Morris, a decorated veteran of World War II and a fighter ace), sees movement in the direction of the enemy and throws a grenade. Roget had sent one of his two men to scout out ahead, and the other soldier – Corporal Paris (Ralph Meeker) – realizes that the movement was the scout returning. He accuses Roget of killing his own comrade and then running in cowardice, but Roget denies it.

Man on Wire is a 2008 documentary film directed by James Marsh. The film chronicles Philippe Petit’s 1974 high-wire walk between the Twin Towers of New York’s World Trade Center. It is based on Philippe Petit’s book, To Reach the Clouds, recently released in paperback with the new title Man on Wire.

The title of the movie is taken from the police report that led to the arrest (and later release) of Petit, whose performance had lasted for almost one hour. The film is crafted like a heist film, presenting rare footage of the preparations for the event and still photographs of the walk, alongside reenactments (with Paul McGill as the young Petit) and present-day interviews with the participants.

It competed in the World Cinema Documentary Competition at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize: World Cinema Documentary and the World Cinema Audience Award: Documentary. In February 2009, the film won the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film, the Independent Spirit Awards and the Academy Award for Best Documentary.

On Christmas Eve, Detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) of the New York City Police Department arrives in Los Angeles to reconcile with his estranged wife, Holly Gennaro (Bonnie Bedelia). McClane is driven to the Nakatomi Plaza building by a limo driver named Argyle (De’voreaux White). The company Christmas party is disrupted by the arrival of thirteen terrorists led by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman).

The terrorists cut the telephone lines, seal the building exits, and replace the building guard with one of their own. Hans and his group secure the party goers as hostages, but McClane manages to slip into the stairwell of the building. Gruber portrays himself to the police as a terrorist working towards various extremist goals, but it is revealed that they are actually trying to steal $640 million in bearer bonds from the Nakatomi vault. When Nakatomi executive Joseph Takagi (James Shigeta) refuses to reveal the code for one of the vault’s seven locks, Gruber executes him. Gruber orders Theo (Clarence Gilyard Jr.), his technical expert, to break through the locks on the vault. Theo reminds Hans that the final lock is powered by circuits that cannot be cut locally. Gruber promises to handle the last lock.

McClane moves through the building, hiding from or killing the terrorists he encounters. He learns more of their motives while acquiring a two-way radio, C4 explosives, and detonators from the body of one terrorist. McClane uses the radio to attract the attention of the LAPD, who send Sergeant Al Powell (Reginald VelJohnson) to investigate. Gruber sends his men, led by Karl (Alexander Godunov), to kill McClane and retrieve the detonators. Fooled by the impostor guard, Powell is about to leave when McClane drops the corpse of a terrorist onto Powell’s police car.

McClane explains the situation via the two-way radio as the police, led by Deputy Police Chief Dwayne T. Robinson (Paul Gleason), arrive. The police send in a SWAT team and an armored vehicle. McClane and Powell are unable to prevent the SWAT team from being ambushed, but McClane manages to kill the terrorists attacking the SWAT team. One of Holly’s coworkers, Harry Ellis (Hart Bochner), tries to negotiate with Hans and McClane for the return of the detonators. McClane refuses to return them, and Gruber shoots Ellis. The FBI arrive, and take control from the police. They order the power to the building shut down, which deactivates the vault’s final lock as Gruber had intended. Theo ransacks the now-open vault, loading the bearer bonds into an ambulance to be used as their getaway vehicle.

Charles Foster Kane (Orson Welles), the enormously wealthy media proprietor, has lost his power and been abandoned by his loved ones, and has been living alone in his vast palatial estate Xanadu for the last years of his life, with a “No trespassing” sign on the gate. He dies in a bed while holding a snow globe, and utters “Rosebud…”; the globe smashes.

Kane’s death then becomes sensational news around the world. Newsreel reporter Jerry Thompson (William Alland) tries to find out about Kane’s private life and, in particular, to discover the meaning behind his last word. The reporter interviews the great man’s friends and associates, and Kane’s story unfolds as a series of flashbacks. Thompson approaches Kane’s second wife, Susan Alexander (Dorothy Comingore), now an alcoholic who runs her own club, but she refuses to tell him anything.

Thompson then goes to the private archive of Walter Parks Thatcher (George Coulouris), a deceased banker who served as Kane’s guardian during his childhood and adolescence. It is through Thatcher’s written memoirs that Thompson learns about Kane’s childhood. Thompson then interviews Kane’s personal business manager Mr. Bernstein (Everett Sloane), best friend Jedediah Leland (Joseph Cotten), Susan for a second time, and Kane’s butler Raymond (Paul Stewart) at Xanadu.

In several flashbacks, it is told that Kane’s childhood was spent in poverty (his parents ran a boarding house), then changed when the “world’s third largest gold mine” was discovered on an apparently worthless property his mother had acquired (the title deeds left to her by a lodger unable to pay his bill). He is forced to leave his mother (Agnes Moorehead) when she sends him away to live with Thatcher, to be educated. After gaining full control over his possessions at the age of 25, Kane enters the newspaper business with sensationalized yellow journalism.

He takes control of the newspaper, the New York Inquirer, and hires all the best journalists (he hires them away from the Chronicle, the main rival of the Inquirer). His attempted rise to power is documented, including his manipulation of public opinion for the Spanish American War of 1898; his first marriage to Emily Monroe Norton (Ruth Warrick), a President’s niece; and his campaign for the office of governor of New York State, for which alternative newspaper headlines are created depending on the result.
